I've been handling commercial inflatable orders for nine years. I've personally made--and documented--about eleven significant setup mistakes. In 2023, one anchoring mistake cost me $780 in repairs and a weekend of rentals. I keep a laminated checklist for every crew now. This is that checklist, adapted for Blast Zone water slides, the Big Ol Bouncer, and the rest of the inflatable lineup.
Who This Checklist Is For
This is for operators and event planners who run commercial inflatables--Blast Zone water slides, inflatable bounce houses, giant slides, combo units, all of that. If you are setting one up for a backyard birthday party, the checklist will still help. But the mistakes I am going to show you come from doing this for real, with rental contracts and repair bills attached.
The checklist has six steps. Follow them in order, and you will avoid the two failure points that cause most of my callouts: poor anchoring and bad site prep.
Step 1: Inspect the Unit Before You Commit to One Spot
Open the storage bag and check every seam, especially on a water slide. I once caught a crack in the slide wall before setup--looked like somebody had folded it around a rock. It would have turned into a blowout under water pressure.
Check your anchor points too. The Blast Zone Big Ol Bouncer bounce house has more anchor straps than people expect. If one strap is frayed, replace it before the event. A strap costs maybe $12. An emergency teardown costs more, and that is not counting the phone calls.
Step 2: Measure the Actual Site
Don't eyeball this. Get a tape measure and confirm three things:
- Footprint clearance--add at least 6 feet on each side for a safety zone.
- Vertical clearance--trees, awnings, power lines.
- Access path--from your vehicle to the setup spot.
Access path is the one everyone skips. I once checked the field dimensions but not the gate opening. The unit fit fine in the field. It did not fit through the access gate. We ended up carrying a commercial water slide through a rental hall. I still get twitchy thinking about that doorway.
If you are running an inflatable rental out of a slide-in camper or a small trailer, measure the camper opening as well. The packed unit can surprise you. And pack it the same way every time; the dimensions change if you fold it differently.
Step 3: Prepare the Ground
This step decides whether your event ends with a refund.
For a bounce house, grass is usually fine. The ground should be level and clear of rocks, sticks, and anything pointy. I use a magnetic broom for metal debris. I am not saying my first event started on a hidden pile of nails. I am also not saying it didn't.
For a Blast Zone water slide, you need a few extra things:
- A slope that is fun but not dangerous.
- A drainage path for the landing pool.
- A steady water supply within hose range.
I skipped the drainage check once. Thirty minutes into an event, the landing pool was sloshing toward a low point, and the grass turned to mud. The slide was fine. The venue wasn't. That was the day I added 'runoff plan' to the top of every checklist.
Step 4: Anchor Everything
Seriously. Everything.
Use all of the anchor points in the manual, not the ones you think are important. For commercial inflatables, ASTM F2374 is the standard to know--it covers design, manufacture, operation, and maintenance. The anchor stakes should go in at an angle away from the unit, and they should be flush enough that nobody trips.
This is also where I admit to being an idiot. In my third year, I decided the grass was hard and the forecast was calm, so I skipped two mid-wall anchor points. Wind came up around 4pm. The unit walked sideways about ten feet while kids were bouncing. I got them out fast, and nobody was hurt, but the shell got chewed up by the frame. Repairs cost $780, and I lost a weekend of rentals.
If you are setting up on asphalt, use water barrels or approved weights instead of stakes. Ballasting requirements are not a suggestion.
Step 5: Power and Blower Setup
The blower has to match the unit. The Blast Zone units I run came with blowers that are rated for the airflow. If you replace one, use an equivalent rated unit.
Power rules I follow now:
- Plug into a GFCI-protected circuit.
- Use a heavy-duty extension cord with the length and gauge recommended in the manual.
- Never run a blower from a fully coiled extension reel. I did that once at a county fair and melted the reel.
I don't have hard data on what percentage of service calls are electrical, but based on our breakdown logs, I would guess it's about 10 to 15 percent. Most of those are cord or circuit issues, not blower failures.
When the unit is up, watch the blower inlet for a full minute. If the fabric is pinching the airflow, the unit will look right but feel soft. A wet or saggy bounce surface is a problem, not a vibe.
Step 6: Set Supervision Rules
This is not a lecture about safety. It's operational.
You need one adult whose only job is watching the unit. Not grilling, not chatting, not unloading the truck. If you have two units, you need two adults. I put a folding chair near the entrance and call it the operator station.
The operator checks:
- Number of riders--stay under the rated capacity.
- Shoes, glasses, and loose objects off.
- No flips or roughhousing near the entrance.
- Seams and stakes visually every 30 minutes.
The 30-minute check is the one that has saved us the most. We caught a loose stake before it became a problem and a small tear before it got big.
Common Mistakes I Keep Seeing (and Make)
Buying for a Situation That Doesn't Match the Unit
If your crowd is mostly teenagers, the Big Ol Bouncer might not be the right call. It's called 'Big Ol' but it is still a bounce house, not a high-impact obstacle course. Be honest about weight limits and age ranges.
If you are working with limited space, consider a smaller slide or a combo unit. There is no perfect inflatable. There is only the one that fits your worst-case event.
Forgetting a Backup Plan
Blowers fail. It's rare, but it happens. When the main unit goes down and you are waiting on a replacement, you need something for the kids to do. I keep a deck of cards in the truck. Old Maid is easy: deal all the cards, remove one card first, then players pull matching pairs and pass the deck. The person left holding the Old Maid card loses.
If you don't know the rules, look up how to play Old Maid card game before the event. Do not try to figure it out while a dozen kids are staring at you. I know from experience.
Taking Down Too Fast
Give the unit time to dry before packing. If you fold a damp slide into a bag, mold will find it. I lost one water slide to a mildew stain that never came out. That was a $2,600 lesson.
Assuming You Don't Need the Manual
The manual is experience from the factory. When you think you have done enough setups and don't need it, that is exactly when a setup goes sideways.
Is This Checklist Enough?
For a single-unit event, yes. For multi-unit events or permanent installations, you need more: structural inspections, a written wind policy, staff training, and possibly insurance requirements. This is a starting point, not a full risk plan.
If you are buying a home inflatable instead of a commercial-grade one, some steps still apply. But residential units have different anchor systems and blower output. Don't assume they are the same.
